Be inviting, be forgiving, be serving, be empathetic, be available, be admiring! I can’t think of a time that being selfless hasn’t made me a better person! I am my best self when helping others!
Yesterday, I went for my weekly visit to see my dear friend, Mary’s husband, Bernie. Mary was called to heaven on February 25th and it has been so hard to see her husband grieving her loss. When I showed up with an orange julius from Dairy Queen I quickly realized that he had what was left of her belongings piled up throughout his apartment. (They both lived in their own apartments at the same apt. complex.. she had moved back to Salina ahead of him and this was the living arrangement that ended up working for them) Nonetheless, I felt devastated because he thought I had not come through on helping move the last of her belongings. He told me last week that he needed her stuff out by Friday. On Wednesday during my visit there was a gal and a young lady that she brought along that was going to let him know by 3:30pm if they would want to purchase the belongings. I kept my cell phone close by awaiting his call.. if he needed our help he was going to call. I never got a call. He said, he thought I was going to call him. I hate misunderstandings! Especially this one! Johnny thought I needed to give him space to decide and handle it because it has clearly been hard for him!
The best part of this story is that I told Johnny the situation as I was heading to work yesterday. Johnny has been taking Wednesday afternoons to work on real estate stuff. He took it upon himself to go help Bernie by moving and getting stuff to donation.
I truly believe that it has been my calling to look out for Bernie since Mary’s passing~ he has no family here. Mary was spunky, decisive and pretty outspoken. I am sure it’s hard to make decisions without her!
I guess where I am going with this story is that putting others before yourself is life changing. Taking yourself out of selfish mode helps us navigate life differently!
